Title: Engaging English Language Learners through technology

Abstract:

Motivating English language learners, creating a learner-centered environment, having students interact and collaborate, addressing multiple intelligences, teaching critical thinking skills, all the while teaching the four skills of reading, writing, listening, speaking – those are the goals of English language teachers. Are they attainable? While technology provides the means, project-based learning provides the pedagogical approach to achieve them, following the cognitive approach to learning (Piaget, Bruner, Bloom), Vygotsky’s social development theory, Dewey’s student-directed learning, and Papert’s constructionism.  A pedagogical framework and examples from the presenter’s intensive English classes will demonstrate how Web 2.0 tools, such as Wikis, VoiceThread with video and audio, facilitate and support all learning and teaching.
